ANOTHER CASE FOR CHRISTIAN EVANGELISM
The United States has been one of, if not, the greatest nation of all times. I, like many, am of the opinion that our founding father’s belief in God and their incorporation of their beliefs into the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution, coupled with the similar beliefs held by the citizens of our great country are the main reasons for our greatness. We have been and will continue to be for some time the world’s only superpower. But someday, as history has repeatedly shown us, that torch will be passed to another country or countries. In my lifetime I have seen a peak in our prowess and somewhat of a decline. The decline directly correlates with the erosion of Christian values in our culture. The United States was born and has always been a Christian nation. But, more and more as of late, we seem to be moving away from those roots! Evangelism is good! Jesus called upon all Christians to practice it. It spreads Christianity and Christian beliefs, which when practiced as He intended brings about only good – never anything bad. Christian ethics impact not only our morals and how we treat others, but our work ethics as well. The New Testament of the Bible provides us the perfect roadmap for life. Effective Christian evangelism that results in a return to the core beliefs and concepts that birthed our great nation could not only forestall the passing of the “torch”, but keep us a viable nation forever. Our passing of our economic and political preeminence to another country will not necessarily a bad thing, but the passing of the torch of Christianity is essential. If and when the US formally passes the torch remains to be seen, but what we do know is that countries like China, India, Brazil and Russia (to a much lesser extent), are going to enjoy unprecedented social, economic and political influence in the not to distant future. As one who thinks that a strong Christian nation like the Untied States made the world a better place to live, I can not help but think that a strong Christian presence in these emerging nations will go a long way to doing the same. China, the third largest economy in the world, will parlay its economic prowess into a strong political contender throughout its region and the world. While I am not sure that we can still call it communist, it is clearly a totalitarian regime with a poor human rights record. The good news is that the economy is not the only thing that is growing in China. Christianity is spreading like wildfire as well. A strong Christian base in China could bring about a democratic form of government and a social conscience that could only enhance the Chinese people’s human rights, and possibly even make China a benevolent nation like ours. While India is already a democratic country with hard working people its civil rights could use a boost as well. Poverty is still rampant. India’s huge population is primary Hindu and its longstanding rift with its neighbor, Muslim based Pakistan, another nuclear power is of great concern. At this very moment their respective troops are faced off against each other in Kashmir poised to strike. It is not my intent to disparage either religion, but often a slight change in dynamics can alter a situation. Stronger US Relations with both countries has of late helped to dissipate these longstanding tensions somewhat. A strong Christian influence in both countries, that would give them something in common, so to speak, could further that endeavor even more. Brazil is a democratic nation that does not seem to have world domination on it s agenda. Well, who could ask for anything more – except a strong practicing Christian base. All those babies in Rio born into poverty, left to grow up with no parents is sad and avoidable. The Catholic Churches’ position on birth control might increase the number of Catholics, but it also causes a lot of suffering when all these poor people have children that they can’t afford to take care of, and very often abandon. Enhanced Christian evangelism would undoubtedly improve this situation, lessening the deaths and suffering of these youngsters. Don’t get me wrong, I am dead set against abortion, but I do not see anything wrong with appropriate birth control. And Russia, what can I say? High oil prices brought us “Back to the USSR”. Russia is now a hybrid capitalist country run by KGB survivors acting no better than gangsters. Putin is among the worst of them. Russia’s rampant alcoholism is a major reason for the average life span of its men being a paltry 56 years. A strong Christian presence would do wonders for this vodka fueled culture. Russia and China are two of the main reasons the United Nations has not been able to succeed in (not that it succeeds in much) obtaining strong enough sanctions against Iran to get it to stop its nuclear program. A strong dose of Christianity might help both these countries to act in regard to what is best for the world (and themselves in the long run) rather than what is best for their pocket books. Internally, all these countries would benefit greatly with a formidable Christian influence as they sort out their new found prosperity. And, as their international influence grows the world would be the beneficiary, as it has been while the United States has been at the helm.
