In the rural areas such as HPP, HOVE, Fern forest, etc., The Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. will bring in electric poles and lines to lots that don’t have it at a cost of approximately $5,000 to $6,000 per pole, for those wanting to hook up to electric power.  The Electric company places one pole every 200 feet. The cost is shared among the users on the street (SSPP unit) who wish to use the power lines.   The electric company will make a  loan (usually around 9% or 10% after 10% down payment) to those who do not want to pay cash, if the total amount is more than $2,000.  The term of the loan is determined by the actual cost of hookup, for example, the less the cost, the shorter the loan.  The monthly payment usually amounts to between $30 and $40.  It is important to note that the fact that a parcel has electric lines running to it, or along side it, doesn't mean that the electric is "paid up", except in Nanawale Estates.  It could still be in an SSPP unit with a balance left to pay; and, the fact that there are no electric lines running to the parcel does not mean that electric is not available.  The Hawaiian Electric Light Company, Inc. can give you the exact cost of hookup to parcels already in a SSPP unit and an estimate for the ones not on the program yet.  The Engineering Department of The Hawaiian Electric Light Company, Inc. can be reached at (808) 969-0311 to verify the status of electric power on a particular lot.  It is also important to note that hooking up to electric power is not mandatory and you do not have to pay for your share of an SSPP unit until if and when you hook up.
