DR. ZHIVAGO STARING BARACK OBAMA In 1957 Russian author Boris Pasternak published his historical novel Dr. Zhivago, which led to his being nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. In response to pressure from the Soviet government he was forced to reject the award. In 1965 Pasternak’s book was made into one of the most successful and memorable movies of my lifetime. In 2002 a TV series of the same name was made by ITV in England. Both are available on Netflix, and I would highly recommend the twain. Dr. Zhivago was a love story about a man torn between two women set to the backdrop of the First World War, The Russian Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Russian Civil War that took place from 1918 to 1920. Prior to WWI the Bolsheviks (Communists) were already knocking at Russia’s door, so to speak. Russia’s participation in the war weakened Russia and its ruling powers, magnified the Bolsheviks cries for change and enhanced the discontent of the Russian people, as wars and crisis’ almost always do. The Bolsheviks selling point to the Russian peasants was change, in the form of restructuring the wealth, i.e., taking the aristocracy’s money and land and distributing it equally among all. Everyone would then work for the government, not themselves, and the government would be a benevolent caretaker of its people. The Russian government, not the Russian people would solve all the ills of society. The Bolsheviks were successful in overthrowing the Tsar in the Revolution and the Reds (Bolsheviks) prevailed over the White’s (anti-Bolsheviks) in the civil war. The desire for change became a reality, and Capitalism in Russia gave way to Communism. But wait! Not only did the aristocracy lose everything, the lowly peasants did too. Not only did the aristocracy suffer immensely, but the peasants did as well. Thousands from all social classes died in the revolution and civil war. Land and property from all social classes was taken away. People of all ranks of society were slaughtered “for the greater good” by the new communist regime. This “change” lasted until the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1980’s. Yes, for about 60 years all levels of the Soviet society suffered torture, torment, poverty and worst of all, the lack of any semblance of freedom. The restructured wealth did not flow from the wealthy to the less fortunate, but instead into the government. The government in turn used it, not for the good of the people, but for territorial and ideological expansion, armaments and a meaningless space race with the United States. Thank God, its Afghanistan debacle finally caused the U.S.S.R. to go broke. Capitalism has revitalized the Russian economy, and, while the civil liberties in Russia are nothing to write home about, they are better than my generation has ever seen. While we are thanking God, it is important to note that one of the first things the Communists did when they came to power was to reject the existence of God and try to remove God and religion from its society. The government became god. No wonder it failed, and failed everybody. DR. ZHIVAGO, the sequel staring Barack Obama started to take effect in 2008. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars, political corruption and the economic downturn brought about a perceived crisis that Mr. Obama was able to exploit. Like the Bolsheviks he promised change. Like the Bolsheviks he sold his candidacy with the promise of paying for entitlement programs that were attractive to our less prosperous citizens and paid for by taxing the wealthy, i.e., restructuring the wealth. Obama, like the Bolsheviks inherited an economy that was very much on the ropes. And, he, like the Bolsheviks chose to expand his political ideology at the expense of the people that bought into his promises. A year ago an $800 billion plus, so called, stimulus package was passed, but the money was not directed towards creating jobs or fixing the infrastructure of our country, but instead towards funding his and his colleagues’ liberal agendas. Rather than focusing on solving the economic woes that brought him to power, he has instead borrowed unprecedented sums for government programs that will do little else than expand government and cost us more money in the long run. His main focus has been on passing a health care bill that will not only enlarge and create more dependence on government, but wreak havoc for the economy. Since his taking office everybody but the very rich has suffered and will continue to languish as long as he continues to follow the tragic script that is so well portrayed in Pasternak’s great book . The less wealthy, that found his promises so attractive have struggled even more than they did before his coronation and will bleed just as, or more, intensely as those whose wealth he has promised to take away. Yes, his promise to rob the more fortunate people (I would describe these people as those willing to work and study hard) of some of their money has come to fruition, but the money has gone and will continue to go to the government with very very little making its way back to the people. As, the Soviets learned, and we will learn as well, it does no one any good to arbitrarily stifle the job creators and punish those who are willing to work. And encouraging, enabling and rewarding people not to work does no one any good in the long run, especially the ones that are thinking they are getting a free ride. The Soviets learned that bigger government means only one thing, less prosperity for everyone. Hopefully it will not take us as long as it took them to figure that out. Even though Mr. Obama was welcomed by many as the Messiah, I am not sure that it is his intent to supplant the worship of God. Nevertheless, the endeavor to create the prodigious government that he envisions, one that undertakes the impossible task of satisfying all the needs of its people, invariably ventures to do just that. In closing, Barak is a great actor, but yet another remake of Dr, Zhivago is the last thing this country or this world needs. He would be much better type cast in a historical documentary playing Jimmy Carter leaving the White House after just one term. Here are a couple of quotes that I like and feel complement this article: "Once abolish the God and the government becomes the God."
